We were newcomers to San Francisco and were wary of starting a family here, but within a few years we became part of the tight-knit Parkside community with its police station, parks, libraries, swimming pool, shopping and restaurants. Well before our children reached high school, our lives began intersecting with St. Ignatius College Preparatory. From a young age, our children took swimming lessons and attended birthday parties at the St. Ignatius pool. They played in the gym when St. Ignatius generously hosted the St. Cecilia-Holy Name basketball tournament. It was an affordable way to attend sports and arts events as a family, and the drama productions rival any local theater company. St. Ignatius College Preparatory offered a full range of academic, arts, and sports camps during the summer, and as a family with two working parents we took advantage of the fantastic facilities and location and signed up our children. Not surprisingly, when it came time for high school, all three of our children chose St. Ignatius College Preparatory, despite their acceptances to Lowell High School and other San Francisco independent high schools. Over the thirteen years our three children attended SI, we observed how the faculty adapted the curriculum and teaching practices to incorporate technology and better prepare students for the workforce and community. Driven by the Jesuit tradition of <U+201C>developing the whole person,<U+201D> St. Ignatius hopes to modernize its 55-year-old campus, as the current school does not have any room left in its current buildings to teach in the ways demanded by the modern era. The goal is to update its educational spaces to meet the needs of current and anticipated modes of education, including collaborative learning, flexible space, and additional lab space. Moreover, the older buildings at the north end of the campus will be updated to meet current seismic codes that will protect students, staff, and the neighborhood in the event of an earthquake. In addition to safety and facility improvements, the project includes 150 new bicycle parking spaces to encourage carbon-free commuting. St. Ignatius will update the landscaping with new trees and medians to mitigate the impact on neighbors. These improvements will benefit St. Ignatius students and the broader community it serves through its summer programs and sharing of facilities with the community. In addition, St. Ignatius is committed to providing this education to a range of diverse students. At least 25% of the current student body is receiving tuition assistance and many of the students come from our middle school (the Fr. Sauer Academy) which provides tuition free education to first-generation college students. Therefore, I strongly urge you to approve the <U+201C>expansion of secondary school<U+201D> located at 2001 37th Ave. for St. Ignatius College Preparatory to update and modernize its facilities. St. Ignatius has educated citizens of San Francisco since 1855 and has had a significant, positive impact on many students and families. As a strong supporter of St. Ignatius College Preparatory, I respectfully request that you approve this project which will yield many positive outcomes for countless young lives.
