My name is Nancy Wang and I am co-director of Eth-Noh-Tec, an Asian American performing arts nonprofit in the Mission. There is a new possible business planned for the Mission that is such a refreshing and needed business: Arcana. The Mission has changed a lot with the onslaught of techies. There are bars and clubs that have displaced our family stores, ethnic stores, second hand stores, and so much more. It has been a sad development for my family, my neighbors all of whom have been residents in the Mission some for over 50 years, others for generations. Of course change is always difficult, but in this case our friendly and diverse businesses on Mission and on Valencia were replaced with not-so<U+2014>friendly businesses and aimed at raucus night life. Naz Khorram has introduced the idea and her plans for a very friendly business: Arcana. Owned and run by person of color, it will be a vegan/vegetarian restaurant with a community venue for local artists to gather and perform. The City knows how many small theaters and local performance venues have been erased from SF. The City has not become a place for its own residents, but for tourists and techies to spend their money. And this has ruined the unique feel of San Francisco and what we were known for. Many have noted that San Francisco is sadly not the same and for the worse. I, myself, and my family are looking forward to welcoming Arcana as a neighbor who will offer and contribute to the friendly, healthy and vibrant community space SF needs. As you know, this community is amongst the hardest hit right now in terms of COVID induced job losses, and I believe her restaurant will help bring more optimism back to the Mission. I have also been given the privilege of hearing the plan for Arcana with a vegan & vegetarian menu that is open late - which is awesome as I think there's a lack of very healthy food past 11pm in the neighborhood. Arcana also will be featuring live performers, artists, and musicians, so it will also be a great opportunity for them to have their voices heard, their work monetized, and to gain a wider audience for their voices, music, and work. Finally, I have also introduced Naz to friends of mine who own Foreign Cinema a few doors down from Arcana's planned spot, and they are also super encouraging, and excited to see Arcana move in a couple of doors down and to bring a very exciting restaurant and event space to the block! I personally would really value late night vegan and vegetarian options, along with the added zen of tea and music and arts performances as it really brings a great vibe to my days to have this as an option. I have been a resident of San Francisco for the past 25 years, the last 19 years living in the Mission district on 15th Street. I am a concerned citizen and regular voter, as well as a small business owner in the area. My psychology private practice office is in the neighborhood on Mission Street, serving queer and POC populations on… Dear Planning Commissioners, This letter is in support of Naz Khorram's Arcana. I have been a resident of San Francisco for the past 25 years, the last 19 years living in the Mission district on 15th Street. I am a concerned citizen and regular voter, as well as a small business owner in the area. My psychology private practice office is in the neighborhood on Mission Street, serving queer and POC populations on a sliding fee scale. Before starting my practice, I trained for three years in the San Francisco Department of Public Health. I also co-founded Bay Area Open Minds - a 200+ strong network of therapists affirming diversity in sexuality and gender. I am writing to urge approval for Arcana. We need more businesses owned by queer, ethnic minority women. And more vegetarian food options can be an important addition to our neighborhood, providing non-violent and health-focused nourishment. Arcana will also provide a platform for creatives and performers - contributing to the cultural vitality of San Francisco. In the 25 years that I have lived here, I have been witness to so much loss when it comes to the cultural, creative and nightlife diversity of our City. I believe Arcana represents an exciting opportunity to bring back some of that old school flavor through peaceful, creative and diverse communing based on wholesome food and showcasing of local artists. The introduction of any new business into a neighborhood can present challenges and concerns. I know that Naz is committed to working with her neighbors to provide representation and opportunities at Arcana. She knows that a sound business is open to feedback and community collaboration in order to best shape it into a sustainable and vital contributor to the area. I have seen many unfortunate instances of gentrification in San Francisco. Naz's business would not be one of them. I foresee Arcana fulfilling a need similar to Manny's, another establishment here in the Mission that has integrated well into the neighborhood. Despite some protests against Manny's, it seems clear that it fits and is more welcoming than many of the so- called "hipster" establishments that serve overpriced coffee and seem exclusionary in their customer profile (e.g. the cafe down the street from my apartment where, even after 8 years of patronage, the baristas act like they've never met me!). As a non-binary gendered Middle Eastern immigrant, Naz understands the importance of inclusion of all peoples, of feeling seen and heard. Please consider supporting Naz's plans for Arcana. WTF Mission? There are organizations in the Mission that need to be broken up. I fully support their efforts to create housing that is not astronomically expensive so real working people can live here. However, these same organizations, some of which get government financing, also try to pummel small independent businesses and prevent them from opening unless they agree to a list of terms they come up with and then hide in an NDA. I think it<U+2019>s absurd. I<U+2019>ve lived in the Mission for almost 30 years. A friend actually owned the building in question for decades. Why are new businesses subjected to mafia-like demands? I love Frida Kahlo<U+2019>s paintings, but why must all new businesses agree to have shrines to her? At a time, even before COVID, when retail and small restaurants are increasingly difficult to sustain, why are we being so restrictive rather than supportive, especially of creative new businesses? Why do small self-appointed groups get all the say? Just because their paid employees and volunteers show up at Planning meetings? We wouldn<U+2019>t even have a New Mission Theater now if some of these groups had their way. Please support this project and encourage reform of the current system to allow for more neighborhood voices, rather than organized factions, to be heard. I rather see thriving businesses that fill the needs of the neighborhood than more vacant storefronts.
