We need more small businesses that reflect the diversity of the Mission, and who are invested in intersectional communities. Arcana reflects this: it is created by an immigrant who is plugged into their community and the diaspora, dedicated to serving the multiplicity and intersections of identities and communities in the Mission District. I have worked with Naz Khorram in the past and seen some of the obstacles and hurdles they have overcome as a queer asylum seeker, artist, ex-prisoner of conscience, and industry professional. I can attest that throughout every single project and hurdle, Khorram has not once compromised their commitments, which are articulated as the commitments of Arcana. For years, LGBTQ+ places have been slowly erased, one by one, from the Mission District. Small businesses that articulate inclusivity and equity, not only through their business model, but also through the hosting of community centered events are also slowly being erased from the Mission District. I am an Iranian American artist, who came to the States as a child refugee, and I have called the Bay Area home for close to twenty years. While I never lived in the Mission District, I previously worked at the artist run space, Incline Gallery, on Valencia Street. I watched, in multiple waves of horror, as the Mission District became more and more gentrified. I watched in horror at how many new businesses disregarded the communities they should be serving with no investment in the neighborhood other than transforming it to meet their patronage. I don<U+2019>t believe for a moment, or even a second, that some of these new businesses ever asked, or bothered to get to know what community looks like and how they could serve it, rather than extract capital at the expense of inclusivity and equity. Naz Khorram and Arcana are, at the core, guided by questions of how to better serve and make visible the multiplicities and intersectionalities of identities and community. When a small business is guided by such principles as Arcana, with the dedication of Khorram, they are committed to holistically serving the community through a transformative model of care, equity and inclusivity. We need more small businesses in the Mission District that are dedicated, at the core, to serving LGBTQ+ communities, immigrants, artists of color and musicians of all generations. I<U+2019>m really excited about Arcana<U+2019>s investment and dedication to community centered programs. Based on my personal knowledge of Naz as well as the extensive vision documents on Arcana<U+2019>s website, the restaurant/artisanal store proposed by her is the kind of place that will continue the embodiment of the Mission sol/soul - its vibrant and uniting motto dictating its inception and progress. I believe that with its international healing herbs and healthy foods, verdant colorful interior and heart-felt performance, Naz<U+2019>s business is conceived and will be driven by a motto of creativity and inclusivity. When accessibility, community involvement, and cultural equity appear more important than ever its time to stand behind an establishment that commits to bringing up the voices, dishes, aspirations and imaginations of the Diaspora, one that I am also part of. I have been a resident of SF since 2007 in neighborhoods surrounding the Mission (i.e. Potrero Hill and Castro), and am currently staying in the Bernal Heights neighborhood. I am in my mid-30s, a first generation Russian-Jewish refugee/immigrant, and also queer. In 2014, I managed Central Market NOW!, a monthly party to activate the mid-Market neighborhood in collaboration with OEWD, SAFEhouse, the SFGTA, a number of community benefit corporations, local arts establishments and restaurants along with the Kenneth Rainin Foundation. It was exciting to see all of these players get on the same wavelength in the spirit of promoting the arts and cultural equity amongst the residents and visitors to the area. I see Naz as acting in a similar capacity - weaving herself into the fabric of the neighborhood in order to add colorful new threads to it. Let's add to the concentrate, the brew, and the roux to the Mission mix when others might dilute it! Let<U+2019>s allow a friendly, accountable, passionate business owner to thrive in a neighborhood she lives in, has learned from and will continue to grow in for years to come. Naz has a unique ability to bring together people and to understand how to make folks feel at home, especially if the graceful ambiance and warm hospitality of her actual home is any indication of this! Naz's story is incredible as it is a Bay Area one. She is young queer refugee, an artist, a florist, and a born chef-foodie, displaced by the throws of the Green Revolution in Iran for her outspoken political views of freedom and humanism as well as for the openness about her sexuality. While many stores nearby on Valencia cater to <U+201C>hipster<U+201D> niches of third wave coffee, chocolate, home design, pricey vintage, or a culturally void healthy eating, the immigrant revolutionary spirit of the owner will permeate this business to give resonance to the places we and our friends come from to form the culture of our beloved new-found home. I say this because it is important that we let the right ones in, and just as critical that don<U+2019>t miss the opportunity to let the Mission develop in order to thrive. The Mission is home to such a variety of flavors <U+2013> too many to name, but a fusion Persian/Middle Eastern healthy eating center in not one of them yet. The Mission is stronger for the presence of a more recent addition like Manny<U+2019>s, which has chosen political organizing, equitable hiring and pay along with activism as its core mission. Arcana, on the other hand is meant to overlap and expand in serving the needs of the diasporic soul - a sense of place, free expression, but also(!) entertainment (we miss having a "chill" place to gather and create late into the evening), homey food and beauty. Another reason I believe in Arcana is because we continue to need spaces that openly center the LGBTQI community, as well as prepare healthy affordable vegan and vegetarian meal options (think Radio Africa & Kitchen, Nick's on Grand in Oakland or the home-delivery model of The Okra Project collective). The suitability for Arcana to take root now is especially acute because it is time when predatory big real estate is rubbing their hands in anticipation of COVID-19's ruthless decimation of small business. I see Arcana as standing to add to the existing character of the Mission without erasing its migratory splendor. No question that we as a community will build a space that the neighborhood will want to rally around. It will live and breathe <U+2013> the Mission, creativity, community, warmth, magic. In October 2019, I had the opportunity and privilege to attend a pop-up film and arts event in the Mission that Naz helped organize. I feel the need to act as two parents and the emotional roller coaster that she has been put under is tremendously weighing heavy on my heart. Of course, she is a grown woman and I am proud of her for being so brave and so stubborn in fighting her way through her biggest dream. Which is to be able to bring people together and feed them, care for them and bring optimism and hope. I am sure many have written you such hopeful and positive comments about her but it is all about the last 10 years. My story will take you to her life before she turned 18 so you can know who she is from the eyes of her mother, which is very intimate. Naz grew up half the time in the city and the other half at the family farm. She grew up around growing plants, having the freshest nicest ingredients, very healthy food cooked by me, her grandma and the people at the farm. Everytime we could not find her around the farm, it would turn out that she was spending time with the workers, listening to their stories and folklore music, eating their food, and learning their craft. Experiences that she would never try in the big city and would never be exposed to if her father was not a farmer. These experiences made her a very humble person. On the other side, me and my family's background in art and design motivated me to sign her up for many different types of art classes in the city. Naz started making arts and crafts and started having shows in the garden of our home. In our awe, many people would show up and buy all the things she made. With the money she made, she bought things that the kids of the farm workers and villagers would never have. Everytime her dad's car would approach the farm, like 20 kids would run towards her, group hug her and then she would just disappear with them for hours. Even after 10 years of not seeing them, as soon as she hears one of them is getting married or is having a baby, she sends money and gifts to Iran for them. Because she will never forget where she comes from and who she is. She never loved anything more than building things, whether it was a sculpture or a relationship. The dedication and hardwork she puts into something she cares for is extraordinary. And that is why I truly believe in Arcana because knowing my daughter, I can imagine what that place will look like. As she grew older, she became very political, many young people did, her father was a leftist before the Islamic revolution in Iran and left the country in the late 70s to seek shelter in England and Germany, shelter from the Islamic regime who was executing the left. His influence on Naz, as well as the political climate of 2008-9 before the attempted Green Revolution hit a deadend, started a fire in her. To seek equality for all, and the first step of course was to change the regim and seek reform of the government. She was arrested, sent to an unknown jail without us knowing where she was at all. I do not want to go to the details as time is short and I am already struggling with not writing so much. When she came out, she told me that politics is not for her, a fist in the air and a broken voice will never get anywhere. She was also high risk if she stayed in the country, so she decided to move to San Francisco. We have nobody in San Francisco, no one even lives nearby from our family and friends, so I asked her why she wanted to go to San Francisco? and she responded "Because it's beautiful, because it's the birthplace of many social and art movements, because I can be free". She left to start fresh, a blank page has begun. Here she is 10 years later, in the place she calls home, the place where she feels free, being told that she is an outsider, she is not like them, she is not welcome. She is trying to open her business in the middle of this crisis and as she is getting crushed by the pressure she is under. She is doing all this to bring me back to San Francisco from Maryland, which I had to move to because I worked as a sales person in San Francisco after I arrived for my asylum ship and could not afford to stay there anymore. She dreams of making good business so she can support her dad to come here too, because he is stuck in Iran, with sanctions and its effects on the economy without seeing her for more than 7 years. She is trying to make a living, a beautiful life for herself and her family and now she is facing exactly what she faced in Iran, a dictatorship style of harassment and threats against her by people who come from similar backgrounds as her, how ironic this is!!! People who migrated like us, went through years of hard work and misery before finally taking a breath. How can they be so cruel to my daughter? Someone like my daughter is gonna be their friend, is gonna be their voice, is going to contribute back to the community and will love everyone like family. How is this fair to her? Knowing my daughter and talking to her for hours now about this, I will take responsibility for her living up to her promises, promises of a place where everybody is loved and everybody is treated equally. As a person, Naz does not even have the energy and the drive to move forward if it was not because she dreams of making a place where she can share her food, love and art with people. Without people, without community, she would feel like nobody and if she was an arrogant person who wanted to open a shop only to make profit, then why Mission? Why such a beautiful and loving concept? Why so much effort to connect with the community? That makes absolutely no sense to me and I am sure it does not to you. Arcana is a result of her years of living in Iran and years of living in San Francisco, interlacing with one another, interlacing all beauties at once. Arcana is a child who took all the great things from its parents, past and present, to be born free, free of all the inequalities and unjust systems that we experience in this world. I have worked with Naz as servers and bartenders and I want to show my full support for their project. Knowing Naz for a couple of years, I got to see someone who truly believes in serving the people. The way she cares for customers is over and beyond what many servers do in this city. She is caring, considerate, always looking for a reason to help out, whether it is the grandma at the table who needs help standing up or the kids running around who need attention, she is always there, one step ahead of everybody. It was quite unusual to achieve all that so fast but for family and friends it was a constant reminder of how much they care for what they do. After working as a manager in a larger service team for a few years, they decided to step down and go back to serving. This was a shocking decision to me and other friends, but their reasoning was that the service industry is very cruel to servers and lower level staff, and they did not want to be a part of that. They fought with the leadership team for months and worked hard to unionize the workers asking for better pay, benefits, and better treatments. My wife and I saw them preparing presentations and holding group meetings, saying that although they are a manager and not a server anymore, they cannot betray their friends, and now that they have more power they must do something about the unjust pay and promotion system at that company. And of course, finally they succeeded and the staff were given better opportunities in hiring and promotions as well as better hourly pays. One month after that Naz walked away from a promotion to a higher managerial position with a better pay, because they were asked to only work for the <U+201C>benefit<U+201D> of the company and not the staff if they were to accept the position. They resigned at that point and left the company. They worked for another few years in service industry before deciding to start their own business, where they can give what people deserve in a much more peaceful and inclusive environment. I shared this story, to give you an example of the type of person you are considering to grant approval to. They would be a great role model for every business that opens in our city. Many of us hope for better younger generations to come and fix what is broken, and I strongly believe that Naz is one of them. I understand that there is opposition from USM regarding their proposed hours of operation until 2 am. While many businesses are open until that time in the city and Mission corridor, Arcana's longer open hours means more higher paying jobs! Artists can make more income for performing in those hours, as their fellow staff making and serving healthy vegan food. It is also important to note, that there are several other businesses on this Mission District Corridor operating till 2AM (Laszlo Bar, El Techo, Lolinda, Alamo Drafthouse, Arena SF, Make Out Room, Cava 22, Doctor Clocks, Bruno's, Beauty Bar and the International Caf <U+2013> to mention a few <U+2013> from the top of my head). It is our belief that Arcana<U+2019>s patrons should blend in with the other existing, late hour operation businesses<U+2019>s patrons; thus, restricting Arcana<U+2019>s hours of operation to earlier then 2AM, could be construed as inconsistent with the operational hours of the other businesses in its vicinity. As you may know, <U+201C>a new report by Yelp covering the second quarter of 2020 finds that 370 restaurants in the San Francisco metro area have permanently closed since March<U+201D> (https://sfist.com/2020/07/24/new-report-says-370-restaurants-closed-in-bay-area/). So, we need to be supportive of anyone trying to open a new business at this time, as new business translates in new jobs and new City revenues. Also, the Mission District, as recent as 2015, lost two of its LGBTQIA<U+2019>s entertainment Landmarks: The Lexington Club and Esta Noche (I believe, we currently only have El Rio as place that caters to the LGBTQIA community <U+2013> I can<U+2019>t be 100% sure). Naz is a proud member of the LGBTQIA Community and Arcana is committed to being a safe place for those who look for a different type of late night experience in San Francisco. In my understanding, Arcana not only will be safe place for LGBTQIA community but a place were EVERYBODY feels welcomed and included.
