My dog and I have been loyal Grateful Dog customers since he was about a year old, about 3 years now. The Grateful Dog is a safe, comfortable, and clean and provides my dog with a much-needed place to go nearly every day while I'm at work. Ernie and his staff are thoughtful and care deeply about their work and the dogs in their care. Without the Grateful Dog, I wouldn't have anywhere for my dog/ companion to go while I'm at work and would be forced to reconsider my location. As someone who lives a block off of Lombard, after the last few months of working from home I can NOT imagine the noise from Grateful Dog eclipsing the constant volume emanating from Lombard, be it the construction OR daily traffic. Occasionally barking dogs are no match for jackhammers, horns, and motorcycles. Most importantly the Grateful Dog is a small business operating in extremely tough times, providing a service that most users consider essential. Trying to revoke their permit is a petty disservice to anyone in the area with a dog. Please let the Grateful Dog continue to provide excellent care to peoples' beloved companions. This aspect is highly important, as I continue to work during these unprecedented times as a manager at Seiler LLP. The firm provides professional essential business services that allow companies and individuals of all sizes to perform their duties and meet regulatory federal and state requirements. The functions of my role require me to go into my office periodically, which requires me to seek alternative supervision options for my dog. The Grateful Dog has always welcomed my dog, regardless of the requests I have given them. Questioning the continued issuance of permits to The Grateful Dog is not only detrimental to the abilities of essential workers to perform their duties, but will impact the Cow Hollow community. Especially now, during the times of COVID-19 they have been instrumental in helping essential workers know that their dogs can be loved and cared for while they are on the front lines. The staff is amazing, and not only do I trust them - my dog Leo loves coming here and adores everyone who is there. Leo has been going to The Grateful Dog since he was 6 months old and they have provided nothing but the best for him the last 2 years. Being a Consultant, I can sometimes work long hours and would have to have to leave him at home for more than 8+ hours during the day. I find so much comfort in knowing that he is running around playing with his friends in a safe and friendly environment all day instead of laying on the sofa staring out of a window wishing he was outside. Even today with having to work from home for the foreseeable future I rely on them to be a place that my beloved boy can go romp around with his friends and get social interactions with not just dogs, but the amazing staff. On the mornings when I grab his leash and say "daycare" he gets so excited running around in circles crying pulling me out of the house and into the car as quickly as he can. As soon as we turn the corner to pull up to The GFD, he jumps up and looks out the window wagging his tail scratching and the door to get out. All 80lbs of him will pull me to their red front door and shove his nose against it trying to get me to open it so he can get in. We are always greeted by a smiling staff member who Leo is over the moon excited to say good morning to every time. San Francisco is such a dog friendly city, and The Grateful Dog is a huge part of so many dog owners everyday lives. Without them, many of us would be forced to relocate out of the city in order to provide our dogs with the care that they need while we are at work. So many of us SF residents don't have yards, so it's really great knowing we can take our babies to a place where they can spend time inside and outside with people who truly care about their wellbeing. We need to support our local, woman/POC owned small businesses more now than ever before, especially those that are providing such an important service to the community. Upon my hiring, I was told to keep dogs out of the backyard, and if they did get out or were out for a very short time, they were under very close supervision and brought in quickly. I have followed this instruction, and have experienced neighbors teasing and instigating the dogs and trying to get them to bark when they think I<U+2019>m not with them (which I always am). Even during these acts of instigation and indirect aggression, our company is still dedicated to respecting the peace and well-being of the neighborhood and have maintained friendly interactions and swift action to anything that may be considered a nuisance. I hope that you consider the impact this company has on the community. I love working here, and I love my Grateful Dog family. These challenges are only compounded when you live in an apartment as so many of us do in San Francisco. You do not have the back-up option of giving your pet access to a backyard while you are at work and, leaving a dog that expresses his anxiety vocally when you are not home is not an option when you share walls with neighbors. If it were not for Grateful Dog, we would not have been able to adopt Willis and I could not imagine him not being a part of our family. The Grateful Dog gives you that peace of mind that not only is your dog being well taken care of but they are also providing an essential service that is so important for dogs; exercise and socialization! This feeling is only reinforced when we arrive daily at Grateful Dog; Willis can barely contain his excitement as he walks through the door to greet the staff and playmates for the day. Today, we are coming together because the Grateful Dog is costing us the peaceful enjoyment of our homes and is jeopardizing the financial investment we have made in our properties. Regarding the conditions of the permit from December 2018, the business has done nothing to change its operations. We implore you to revoke their existing permit and deny their permit to operate outdoors. They have proven that they don<U+2019>t want to be good neighbors or comply with the conditions of their permit. The conditions state: Result: The Project Sponsor shall consult a licensed sound engineer to determine best practices with regard to noise abatement concerns and shall implement any methods and techniques recommended by the sound engineer. The premises shall be adequately soundproofed or insulated for noise and operated so that incidental noise shall not be audible beyond the premises or in other sections of the building. A sound engineer wasn<U+2019>t consulted until July 2020, during COVID-19 when people are not sending dogs to daycare or traveling. (The meeting was December 2018 It took them 18 mos to do this despite it being a condition of the existing permit, which explains their multiple requests for continuances.) We can hear dogs barking when we are inside our homes, even when the dogs are inside their building. The building is NOT soundproofed. An employee told me they try to leave windows and doors open, due to the stench<U+2019>, making it even louder for neighbors. The Project Sponsor shall conduct one additional neighborhood meeting, which shall be attended by Department staff. This meeting will update the neighbors on the range of proposed measures to address issues related to noise, sound, odor, and other nuisances. This meeting happened JULY 9th attended by all neighbors and David Weissglass. There were NO UPDATES on proposed measures to address issues related to noise, sound, odor, and other nuisances because no work has been done. Quarterly inspections. Department staff shall conduct unannounced inspections of the business to ensure compliance with all conditions set forth in this Motion. As you likely read in the pre-meeting notes, David visited 3 times and was not allowed in to complete the inspections due to liability reasons.<U+2019> It doesn<U+2019>t take a genius to figure out that the business has something to hide. An action plan was supposed to be completed addressing noise concerns, drainage concerns, odor concerns and employee conduct concerns. Neighbors have witnessed NO CHANGE in operations from December 2018. No work has been done on sound issues, no work has been done in the yard to mitigate odor or drainage and employees still routinely yell at the dogs, all well documented in videos we will share at the meeting. In addition, cage-free boarding is mentioned as a condition yet David notes cages in his inspection notes. Community liaison No community liaison has been named. The business was told to be open to feedback and ensure a General Manager is on-site from 9:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Monday-Friday. I have called many times, and documented the times, and a GM was never on duty. In fact, when David Weissglass went to do his inspections during business hours there wasn<U+2019>t a manager there or he would have been allowed to inspect the yard. Regarding the Grateful Dog<U+2019>s request for a permit to use the yard: Please look at the size of the yard in question. It is NOT big enough for an outdoor activity area. Its only purpose is to allow the dogs to go to the bathroom, which saves the business from the expense of having to walk dogs but makes it unbearable for the neighbors. Despite what the business claims, the dogs are allowed out unsupervised and the barking is incessant. Employees aren't trained or know the rules, which has been proven by calling the business and asking about policies. When the dogs are supervised it means employee yelling on top of the barking, which is equally irritating. With an unlimited number of dogs, which you granted in December 2018, it<U+2019>s the neighbors that bear the brunt of this business. We experience noise, noxious odors and flies that render our yards useless. This business thinks it<U+2019>s untouchable and is an incredible financial liability for the homeowners around it. The city has done nothing to protect the investment we have made in our homes. We have lost our peace and the use of our yards because you prioritize dogs over homeowners. This business shouldn<U+2019>t operate here, surrounded by homes. Enough is enough. As an employee and team member of this small business, I am requesting you continue to support this essential establishment that is remaining open during a pandemic to care for dogs whose owners have to work as well. I have been employed by The Grateful Dog for almost a year now, and it has been a wonderful and rewarding experience thus far. The dogs that come in for daycare are always excited to greet us and see their doggy friends. Likewise, the owners always come in with a smile of relief knowing their companions are being taken care of by trusted staff who love them. We are open every day of the week to accommodate for any emergencies that require dog owners to leave their pets with us for days, sometimes even up to weeks. Other owners who work essential jobs, like nurses and first responders, are especially thankful that we have remained open during difficult times because they rely on us to look after their dogs while they perform their own duties. Prior to being hired, it was made very clear that cleaning would be one of our main responsibilities as an employee, as expected in any animal facility. Each employee, including myself, will have a list of cleaning duties that need to be completed before the end of our shifts. Now with COVID-19 present, we have extended the list of our cleaning tasks and increased the time spent cleaning. Everyday we do rounds of dusting, sweeping, mopping, and sanitizing the front desk lobby and main dog play areas. When dog owners come in to drop off and pick up their companions, we always wear our masks and maintain a distance between us. We keep a very clean and sanitary facility, as we have never received any issues or complaints regarding smells from customers. Another one of our main responsibilities is to keep the noise level from dogs barking to a minimum. We have always mitigated dog barking by using treats for positive reinforcement or by simply distracting the dogs attention toward something else(diversion techniques), all part of our training. Since I was hired, we were told to not let the dogs use our backyard, as we were going through a process of getting full backyard use restored. We were also instructed to be respectful of the neighbors and we didn't want them complaining about barking dogs, however, they have never formally complained to us nor brought anything to our attention. In fact, sometimes the neighbors<U+2019> dogs start barking which ignites our dogs to bark who were otherwise quiet. I have even heard the neighbors, on the other side of the fences, whistle at our dogs to try and get them barking so they can record them. This is cruel, not only to the dogs, but to The Grateful Dog. We remain thoughtful of our neighbors by keeping the noise level down and by keeping the backyard sanitary so there are no off smells. The Grateful Dog is a local family-run business that has complied with all necessary permits, and remains an important and essential business for dog owners in the neighborhood. I do have a full time job that is thankfully done remotely, but that means I can not attend to my dog all the time. We balance our walks with long walks in the parks but I can not do this every day. Exercise and socialization are key for my puppy, without it he could become a destructive dog that can lead to having to abandon him or I can get hired from lack of focus all day on the job. The Grateful dog allows me that outlet for balance, to provide a group of dogs and exercise on days I start meetings with teams abroad at 7am, barely get time to shove a pre-cooked frozen food item in my mouth, and end up working all day until 7,8, 9pm. The Grateful dog means my dog is mentally and physically healthy, that leads to me being good at my job and happy and healthy, and our SF community having another contributor to the economy as well as a happy and healthy doggie citizen. I know on the surface it may feel that this business is not essential, I empathize with parents trying to balance their lives and that of the beings they are responsible for.
