Our union represents thousands of foodservice workers at universities, offices, airports, hospitals, hotels, and tech campuses in San Francisco and throughout the Bay Area. When these jobs are union, workers can begin to afford living in San Francisco, can take their fa… Dear Commissioners: I write to oppose legislation before you this Thursday that would prohibit or limit employee cafeterias in office buildings. Our union represents thousands of foodservice workers at universities, offices, airports, hospitals, hotels, and tech campuses in San Francisco and throughout the Bay Area. When these jobs are union, workers can begin to afford living in San Francisco, can take their families to the doctor, can count on regular wage increases and can plan to retire with dignity. The proposed ordinance targets a segment of the food service industry where workers actually have a chance to organize into a union without the risk of retaliation by their employers. While this opportunity isn<U+2019>t afforded to every worker in every employee cafeteria <U+2013> as it should be <U+2013>the companies operating these cafeterias are much more likely to ensure a fair process for unionization than free-standing restaurants. By banning or disincentivizing such workplaces <U+2013> and instead privileging free-standing restaurants and catering companies <U+2013> the City and County of San Francisco would set back our efforts to improve the conditions of working people in food services industry. Proponents of this ordinance<U+2014> members of the Golden Gate Restaurant Association<U+2014>by and large do not create good living wage jobs, with health care and pensions, that keep working people in San Francisco. A cook at a non- union restaurant can count on making the city minimum wage of $15 an hour and possibly have some money set aside by their employer in a healthcare spending account. A unionized cafeteria worker at Facebook or USF earns anywhere between $3 and $8 more per hour, covers their entire family on top-quality health insurance, and can depend on a pension when they retire. The most urgent question facing our city <U+2013> in Central SoMa and beyond <U+2013> is how to create good quality working class jobs that allow people to sustain their families in the face of growing income inequality.
